Om Shirdi Sai Ram.
Namaste. Rudraksham Rudraksham is the seed of the Rudraksha tree. These trees are mostly found in abundance in Nepal, in the Himalayan slpes. The dry seeds form the rudraksha bead, which is being used as a rosary and also worn as a chain. The seed is rough in texture, with the surface divided into segments by ridges running from top to bottom. These form the faces of the rudraksha. The number of faces range from 1 to 10. A major percentage of beads available have 5 or 6 faces. The single face rudraksha, considered to be the form of Lord Siva, is very rare and unique. Two faced rudraksha - Devi. The three face rudraksha - Agni. The four face rudraksha - Brahma. The five face rudraksha - Kalakni Rudra. The six face rudraksha - Subramanian. The seven face rudraksha - Manmadan. The eight face rudraksha - Vinayaga. The nine face rudraksha - Bhairava. The ten face rudraksha - Vishnu. The eleven face rudraksha - Ekadasa Rudra. The twelve face rudraksha - Dvada Sadhithas. The thirteen face rudraksha - Shanmuga. The fourteen face rudraksha - One who is the possesor of such a rudraksha is considered to be an aspect of Lord Siva himself. It is that rare and significant. It is a rare gift of nature to man in the sense, that most beads come with a hole drilled in the centre, as if nature intended man to use the rudraksha bead to form a chain. Only such rudraksha beads are considered auspicious. The rudraksha possesses magnetic power and hence when placed between two copper coins, it spins. This magnetic power inherent in the beads is immensely effective to our body and mind and hence wearing a rudraksha mala brings good health and mental peace. It reduces heat in the body, brings down blood pressure and also releives mental pressure and tension. It has been said, that if you drink water in which a rudraksha bead is soaked for 5 minutes, it helps greatly in reducing blood pressure |

Re: Maha Periavaa's (Kanchi Saint)Article - Rudraksham
namaskar,
It seems that beads from Nepal are with the hole already in place but the ones from India and other places need drilling (with a skewer) by hand.

oM aH shIM hrIM ruM rudrakshamAlinI shuddhabhava svAhA The Rudraksha is the woody tuberculate stone from the blue edible fruit of Elæocarpus ganitrus Roxb. 1814, found throughout the Indian and Malaya Peninsulas. The Rudraksha (also known as Haraksha, Nilakanthaksha, Sharvaksha, Shivaksha, Amara, Pushpachanamara, Pavana, Bhutanashana) is the ‘Sadhu Tree’, beloved of Shiva. Ayurveda considers the fruits to be useful in diseases of the head. ALL TRUE RUDRAKSHA HAVE A NATURAL HOLE. The ½ moon ek-mukhi variety is natural, but it does NOT have a hole, and it comes from a different species of Elæocarpus. The 2 and 3-mukhi varieties that do not have a natural hole are also from a different species of Elæocarpus. The 3-mukhi type is common at Ashrams around Haridwar and Rishikesh, but it is not a true Rudraksha. True 2 and 3-mukhi Rudraksha are available (mostly from Nepal). In smaller or more immature Rudraksha, the hole may be very small, and these need to be pierced before they can be threaded. The very small varieties are also from different species, and they are mainly obtained from outside of India and Nepal. There are particular reasons for wearing particular varieties of Rudraksha, but EVERYONE can benefit from the standard Panch-Mukhi Rudraksha ~ which truly is the supreme Rudraksha. Perfect “special quality” 5-mukhi Rudraksha are available in India for 11 Rp.; and ordinary 5-mukhi Rudraksha are readily available for only 1 Rp.! And at some Ashrams and Mandirs, they are given freely as Prasad. Each Rudraksha tree has its own characteristics, and the finest examples generally come from Himalayan trees in both India and Nepal ~ especially Nepal, where Rudraksha trees still grow wild in the jungle. In India, however, almost every Rudraksha tree is known and people collect every last Rudraksha, so that only old trees exist in the wild. Some nurseries are selling young Rudraksha plants, and most of the newer trees in India come from the same genetic source. Unless specially treated, Rudraksha seeds are very slow to germinate (2-3 years). According to the Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad [translated by Svami Shivananda] Hari Om! I praise the Effulgent State of Absolute Peace, belonging to Shri Maharudra, which is to be known through the Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad.
