Karaka's an introduction

Hari Om
~~~~~~
Namaste,
I Have mentioned karaka's on a few occasions regarding Jyotish.
There are 3 types -
Naisargika or natural -shows everything that exists in creation. This is represented/owned by Brahma , since He is the author of all this creation. All 9 graha's are considered in this scheme.
Chara - are variable - there are 8 graha's ( Ketu is not included here) and are ruled by Vishnu. These chara karaka's indicate who influences the native in this life. Visnu rules over sustenance, maintenance and spiritual progress, these charakaraka point out these influences in one's chart.
Sthira - are fixed. There are 7 graha's in this category and are ruled by Siva. These fixed karka's show the destruction of the body , hence Rudra plays a key role. Rahu and Ketu are not part of the 7, as they do not have physical bodes (e.g. moon or Chandra is of material origin, size, weight, mass, etc). These sthira-karaka assists the Jyotisha in determining the death of the body.
So, this karaka is the significator, indicator or one who causes an event , situation or condition. We have natural, variable and fixed as mentioned above. The Charakaraka are of great import to the sadhu as it points out some key influences:
Atmakaraka - the SELF
Amatyakaraka - the Advisors ( guru's and the like)
Bhratrikaraka - Siblings
Matrikaraka - Mother or Mother figure ( nurturing)
Pitrikaraka - Father and/or Father figure ( a boss, leader, etc)
Putrakaraka - Children or Child like ( followers, sisya)
Jnatikaraka - Rivals
Darakarka - Spouse or the like ( married to or devoted to)
What is of interest is the Atmakarka for the sadhu - as this also assists one on determining the Ishtadevata from a Jyotish perspective. If one wishes to read this information please consider the following Ishtadevata specific posts:
http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showpost.php?p=8883&postcount=1
When a Jyotish uses the Naisargika or natural karaka system, he/she looks at each graha and its indication/signification it plays in one's chart:
Sun: Ravi or Surya- Atma, physical constitution, eyes-seeing, health, east direction and dawn : Karaka of the 1st house ( Lagna), 10th (Career), 9th, and 5th houses.
Jupiter: Guru or Brihaspati - Family, wealth matters, expansion children, guru-teachers, religion, fortune, elder brothers: Karakak of the 2nd , 5th, 9th, and 11th houses. The NE direction.
Mars: Mangala - Courage, younger siblings, strength or stamina, blood, defense, enemies: Karaka of the 3rd, 6th, 4th, 5th houses. The S direction.
Moon: Chandra - Mother, compassion, feelings, mind & emotions, milk and ghee (soma too!), pearls, the evening: Karaka of the 4th, 1st and 11th houses, and the NW direction.
Venus: Sukla -wife and husband, martial relationships, vehicles, pleasures of the bed, fluids, perfumes, dance , music, song, e.g. feeding the senses: Karaka of the 7th house, 4th house, 12 house . The SE direction.
Mercury: Buddha - speech, learning, memory, credits, honors, friends, business, adeptness, mathematics: Karaka of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 10th and 11th houses and owner of the North direction.
Saturn: Sani - longevity, troubles, grief, losses, ailments, limps, dishonor or fall from grace, hard labor, imprisonment, renunciation, one-pointedness. Karaka of the 8th, 6th, 5th and 12th and the West direction.
Rahu: accidents, occult knowledge, life in a foreign land, poisons, skin dis-eases, arguments, darkness. Karaka of the 7th, 9th and 6th houses. Owns the SW direction.
Ketu:- occult knowledge, moksha, detachment, fastidious, imprisonment. Karka of the 12th, 9th and 8th houses. Owns the NW direction.
I will add to this conversation to round out the discussion.
pranams,
Re: Karaka's an introduction
Namaste Yajvan,
Is Atmakaraka determined from the Navamamsha chart only ? Or just the birth chart ? You mentioned in one place in your posts that it is derived from the ninth divisional chart ~ but I am not fully certain that I understand you there.
Thanks for your posts on this important topic.
Namaste Arvind and sm78,
Dear sm, if you access this post http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/sho...86&postcount=1 it will take you step by step on the arrival at the Ishtadevata - as seen in the D9 Navmasa Chart also called the Dharma-amsa ( Dharma-division) chart. I am happy to assist if there are additional questions.
Arvind, thank you for your post...yes these yoga's are quite interesting. I think BV Raman also has these in his 300 most important combinations book. We will also find special combinations pending different lagna's e.g. Hora Lagna, Sri Lagna, Ghati Lagna ( now it starts to get interesting!) not to mention the Graha Lagna for each planet.
Parasara-muni suggests looking at the amsa's or divisions of the two planets you mention above per the dasa varga scheme ( the 10 divisional charts) when considering the strength of a Raja Yoga. The more the planet is vargottma, in exaltation or moolatrikona ( all positive postions, more info on this if requested), then the Raja Yoga flourishes.
Sage Parasara grouped the charts thusly:
Shad varga or 6 charts - D1,D2,D3, D9,D12,D30
Sapta varga - 7 charts - D1,D2,D3,D7,D9,D12,D30
Dasa varga ( the one mentioned above) 10 charts Add D10, D16 and D60 to the Sapta list to get the 10.
These amsa's are finer and finer view of ones birth chart at higer levels of resolution. Not for the faint at heart or the beginning Jyotish student.
What I find worth the study, if there is time, is the insights that are revealed by the union (yoga), combinations of the graha's:
  • Ravi Yogas - solar combinations
  • Chandra Yogas - lunar combinations
  • Maha-purusha Yogas - producing 5 kinds of great beings/men and women
  • Nabhasa Yogas - celestial combinations
  • Raja Yoga - power and greatness combinations
  • Dhana Yoga - wealth giving combinations
  • Daridra Yogas - poverty combinations
The most interesting yoga I see happen in this day-and-age is Vipareta Raja Yoga - that is, success after an initial struggle ( overcoming the odds as one would say) that involves the 6th , 8th and 12th lords ( owners of dusthana's).
pranams, and thank you both for your posts.
I thought my next post would be on the tattva's - perhaps if you wish to share your knowledge , we can pass on to other HDF members? That is, how the tattva's also relate to the graha's, and this, is the basis of their influence.
Thanks again for your post. Jaimini-muni is most excellent and provides additional insight to Parashara-muni's works.
Om Shirdi Sai Ram.
Namaste.
Shri Yajvan,do you have any knowledge on the effects of Badhaka(Obstruction) and Badhakesh(The lord of Bhadhaka) pertaining to different houses in Astrology.
For Eg : It is said that if the Bhadhaka or the Bhadhaka Lord is in the 12th house from the Lagna (Ascendent) then there will not be much hindrances for the native.The 12th house being the house of Loss / Moksh(Salvation.)
I would like to know the results from 1st house till 12th house.
Pl Note : I know the Bhadhaka's for different houses.
Bhadhaka - For a Moveable sign it is the 11th house lord,For a Fixed sign it is the 9th house lord and For a Dual sign it is the 7th house lord.
An Eg : Aries (Moveable)Sign - Saturn,Taurus(Fixed) Sign - Saturn,Gemini(Dual) Sign - Jupiter and so forth.
Bhadhakesh - If for a Aries lagna,Saturn is in Aries then the Bhadakesh would be lord of the house wherein Saturn is situated.viz;Mars.
Namaste Arvind,
Yes the bhadaka I have studied a bit and some of the remedies...For those reading for the first time, this Badhakesh , or the lord of the badhak sign, causes obstructions in ones life. There is also Tara Vedha, or by nakshatra constillation too ( we will not discuss at this juncture).
We also know that removal of obsticles is owned by Ganesha ( Ganapathi) and is instrimental here with the badak issues, yet that mentioned:
What is your area of interest. Is this regarding dosha's or kastha phala [ areas of problem or issues]. Many times one can look to the Arudha's and see issues too... bhadaka graha's play a role no doubt. PLease discuss and we can take a look... Depending on the lord of the rasi where the badhakesh resides, it will indicate the blemish.
Yet you ask, "I would like to know the results from 1st house till 12th house" are you asking for the results for each?
If this is the case, this becomes a long post for each rasi + the exceptions for each. Plus, as you already know, Rahu is badak-karaka and its placement also has to then be reviewed. ALso added to this task is Prasna Marga sites additional ideas of Badak houses:
For all movable rasi's - Aquarius is badak (owned bt Sani)
For leo/virgo/scoripo and sagittarius - Scorpio ( that natual 8th house) is badak
For capricorn - taurus ( owner is Venus) and is Badak
For gemini/pisces - sagittarius and Guru ( Jupiter) is badak which I Have found unusual as Guru is the most sattvic.
One cannot forget the 22nd drekkana ( pronounced dresh-kana) can cause badak effects and the 64th navamasa too.
So this request suggests more of a study then a post...
One last thought you mention " Bhadhaka Lord is in the 12th house from the Lagna (Ascendent) then there will not be much hindrances for the native.The 12th house being the house of Loss / Moksh(Salvation.)"
Yes, the 12th a loss house and not much harm is indicated, yet it is still recommended that a simple remedial measure to the tattva or the badak graha of music and song be offered. For each graha there is a specific offering or remedial measure ( some call upaye) - this can be yajya's, puja, gifting to the poor, arranging festivals and dance ( that of happiness), etc.
Namaste Arvind,
Yes the bhadaka I have studied a bit and some of the remedies...For those reading for the first time, this Badhakesh , or the lord of the badhak sign, causes obstructions in ones life. There is also Tara Vedha, or by nakshatra constillation too ( we will not discuss at this juncture).
We also know that removal of obsticles is owned by Ganesha ( Ganapathi) and is instrimental here with the badak issues, yet that mentioned:
What is your area of interest. Is this regarding dosha's or kastha phala [ areas of problem or issues]. Many times one can look to the Arudha's and see issues too... bhadaka graha's play a role no doubt. PLease discuss and we can take a look... Depending on the lord of the rasi where the badhakesh resides, it will indicate the blemish.
Yet you ask, "I would like to know the results from 1st house till 12th house" are you asking for the results for each?
If this is the case, this becomes a long post for each rasi + the exceptions for each. Plus, as you already know, Rahu is badak-karaka and its placement also has to then be reviewed. ALso added to this task is Prasna Marga sites additional ideas of Badak houses:
For all movable rasi's - Aquarius is badak (owned bt Sani)
For leo/virgo/scoripo and sagittarius - Scorpio ( that natual 8th house) is badak
For capricorn - taurus ( owner is Venus) and is Badak
For gemini/pisces - sagittarius and Guru ( Jupiter) is badak which I Have found unusual as Guru is the most sattvic.
One cannot forget the 22nd drekkana ( pronounced dresh-kana) can cause badak effects and the 64th navamasa too.
So this request suggests more of a study then a post...
One last thought you mention " Bhadhaka Lord is in the 12th house from the Lagna (Ascendent) then there will not be much hindrances for the native.The 12th house being the house of Loss / Moksh(Salvation.)"
Yes, the 12th a loss house and not much harm is indicated, yet it is still recommended that a simple remedial measure to the tattva or the badak graha of music and song be offered. For each graha there is a specific offering or remedial measure ( some call upaye) - this can be yajya's, puja, gifting to the poor, arranging festivals and dance ( that of happiness), etc.
pranams,
Om Shirdi Sai Ram.
Namaste Yajvan.
Could you please suggest an appropriate book which would give an insight into the Badhaka and Badhakesh.
Please emntion the name of the book and the author.
Namaste Arvind,
I wish I had one book to recommend - this knowledge is across mutiple books, papers, etc.
I do have several books that give some info in pages not chapters , that is not comprehensive but worth having. ANd if you are pursuing Jyotish for study having these books will only increase your knowledge:
- Crux of Vedic Astrology - timing of Events, by Sanjay Rath
- Vedic Remedies In Astrology - Sanjay Rath
Sanjay's skills, parampara, insights, etc are are substantial. He is a beacon of Jyotish knowledge in this time we live. I think both books are from Sagar publications.
His sisya's too are starting to produce books and literature. The Jyotishi I look for guidence, advice, study and the like also has spent time with Sanjay. Hope this meets your expectations.
If you care for a list of 'must have' books on Jyotish I will be happy to list them out.
