Dear friend IcySupreme
Dogs are considered very auspicious in shaivite homes. Dogs are the vahana of Lord kaala bhairava (a manifestation of Shiva). Every depiction of lord Kaala bhairava will have a dog accompanied with him. For a shaiva, keeping care of dogs is a way of showing love and gratitude to Shiva. And dear Friend I am an Indian and have lived 26 years of my life in India. We Hindus (Indian Hindus) love Dogs very very much. Don't listen to the person who called for dogs to be kept outside home.

When the light has risen, there is no day, no night, neither existence nor non-existence; Siva alone is there. That is the eternal, the adorable light of Savitri, - and the ancient wisdom proceeded thence (Svetasvatara Upanishad IV-18). :)
Vannakkam: If its good enough for Bhairava, its good enough for me.

One warning about dogs as pets.
Firstly, they are very intelligent. They consider you and members of the family as "part of the pack" (the DNA of a dog and a wolf are identical, you cannot detect the difference).
Because of this, having the "pack" together is very, very important to them. They do not like to be left alone, they do not like to stay with strangers, they stress out and can even have psychological problems if away from family (pack) and master, they crave companionship of pack.
If you take a dog, you take on the karma to take care and love them.
YOU CANNOT LEAVE IT ALONE, the dog really needs to go WITH you where you go.
SO THAT MEANS TRAVEL OPTIONS ARE LIMITED FOR MANY YEARS!
Understand?
Dogs are wonderful. But their paws carry a lot of germs, also licks. So you have to be careful also. Again, I love dogs, and am not trying to over emphasize germs. I am a HUGE devotee of Bhairava. But the main point is, if you are young, I recommend you travel and go on holy treks, travel! You really limit this if you have a dog.
