    Namaste,

I think the quantum particle which also is a waveform best describes.

Mind is both the source and the reflection, depending on one's point of view

It is revealed in the sacred doctrine of Kula and by the great Bhairava, that the perfection is achieved by that very means by which fall occurs.

    Dear Znanna:

Your note brings two things to my attention and it stems from the fact you have not clearly answered my question with an unequivocal yes or no.

First, it is interesting to note that you extrapolate scientific investigation from the realm of objectivity to metaphysical state (if you consider“mind” as reflection)! Therefore, ”Depending on one’s point of view” is very subjective and not scientific. While, science as a tool represents our effort to describe the objective world we live in and enable us to see the relationship of all things, at the basic level of human consciousness, science is none of these.

Are you posing mind as real “object” or something of philosophical or mystical significance? When Science is portrayed as taking on deep philosophical significance don’t you think it projects its authority beyond the mandates of description of real objects?

If it is created then there is scientific explanation. If it is eternal then can science explain adequately and objectively?

Second, refers to mind being treated as objective material. It is well known that body is made of dense matter and the mind is made of subtle matter. Therefore, we have to be careful with the terminology that we use. The body/mind complex has its origin in matter. Basically, it is used as a vehicle to attain “higher self”. Mind is of material nature because it ceases to exist at death. The conscious mind is dependent on sensory interaction of waking state, which shuts down at sleep or coma. The mind is separate from “atman” because only mind can be restless and atman cannot and only matter can be restless.

    Blessings,

    Re: Is mind eternal?

Is mind eternal? Yes, so long as a soul reincarnates, since mind is absorbed into the causal body when the soul goes to the heaven and recreated at the time of reincarnation.

Mind is the primary expression of a human soul (and possibly an animal soul) on the mental plane or world, whose matter the soul draws and forms a mental body when it reincarnates. Mind also expresses itself on the astral plane or world in the form of emotions, and in the physical world as the master of the physical senses.

Sanatana Dharma has four terms that describe the four functions of human mind: manas, chitta, ahamkara and buddhi. Manas is the sensory, processing mind. Chitta is the storage of impressions. Ahamkara is the Ego, the 'I-maker'. And Buddhi knows, decides, judges and discriminates.

Using an analogy of the ubiquitous computer, buddhi is its operating system that warns before acting on good and bad programs, chitta is the hard disk and manas is the main memory. The entire system, as an individual unit, constitutes the ahamkara. What is its soul then? In a limited sense, it is the electricity, the ultimate driving force. If God made man in His own image, man imitates God in the make up of a computer system, although man can never hope to provide the consciousness or intelligence (which is the real soul) by physical means.

Mind resides in the mental body. Its abstract thoughts are communicated in the form of pure light. Its concrete thoughts form shapes, drawing matter of the mental plane. We primarily think in terms of pictures. For example, if we think of a horse, we can clearly see it in all its splendour as an animated image with the surrounding scenery. This is the shape that actually forms on the mental world, using its matter, before it is communicated to the physical brain for action.

Where mental shapes involve emotions, they descend onto the astral world, and express themselves as irregular shapes of colors. Thoughts and emotions express themselves in the form of neuro-chemical and electrical reactions on the brain and the affected physical parts. Thus, a prototype of everything is already formed on the higher planes or worlds, before they find their ultimate physical expression.

The physical body is nothing more than an ultimate receptacle for all the subtle elements that combine to form a human personality. As Pattinatthar sang, it is just a wind-bag (in the literal sense) and a clay pot.

    Dear Saidevo:

Technically you are right but that does not answer my question. If my question had been - does mind reincarnate then you are correct to say that it does along with soul. However, the question is – is mind eternal? – The answer is no.

As long as soul is reincarnating then you are correct. However, the cycle of reincarnation for a particular soul is not eternal. At some point in time the reincarnation cycle ends where mind does not exist anymore. The mind is a construct of Creation, and therefore, it cannot be eternal.

Eternal means always present not bound by temporal conditions. At liberation the soul merges with Brahman and is no longer separate from Brahman and loses its identity and does not reincarnate anymore. In the absence of soul, the mind does not exist and therefore, is not eternal.

    Blessings,
