As I said, that is particularly odd. I will not defend him on that front, yet similarly I don't know the correct solution to that issue either so I will not bash him either. There is a very negative outlook in general towards religion and rituals in the UK and it harbours a lot of hatred towards the ''believers''. I don't know what his motives are.
You cannot turn a blind eye towards the article he has written. It gives a peek into his mind to understand his way of thinking which subsequently explains the motives for his other actions. You do not need to be Sherlock Holmes to understand that he is convinced that the customs and beliefs of ordinary Hindus are beneath the spirituality of neo-Vedantic thought and that he wants to straightjacket that view through the education system and politics.
I can't say that his actions reflect what he propounded in that article. Though I will not say you are wrong and will take what you have said on board. Namaste.
Edit : Just a small update. I think you are wrong. I watched a GCSE lecture he did for high school students teaching them about the Smritis and Srutis, and he talked about the srutis including all the STORIES and NARRATIVE very highly.
