    School of Thought/Denominations

    Namaste all,
I was just wondering if the lining up of schools of thought and sects are completely mutually exclusive or whether choosing one or the other assumes that you take on a specific selection of another.
    Let me explain:

In the schools of thought you may find
    1)Yoga
    2) Nyaya
    3) Samkhya
    4) Mimamsa
    5) Vedanta
    6) Vaisheshika
    and so on

and in the Denominations you may find
    1) Shaivites
    2) Vaishnavism
    3) Shaktism
    4) Smartism

    & so on.

So how do these line up? Does Hindu philosophy allow someone to virtually be seated in any combination?
I guess the more important question is
is the assumption that you choose a DENOMINATION or a SCHOOL OF THOUGHT, but not BOTH. For e.g. if you choose Shaivism, that will eventually lead you to the Shiva Agamas and so on, and if you choose Vaishanvism, you are bound to be lead by the Gita. Similarly if you choose Vedanta you are bound to be lead to the Vedas. So perhaps you only pick one in total from both, not one each.
    Thanks.

It is the notion of how Reality is viewed; this view comes via the wisdom that is at the core of sanātana dharma. This wisdom is then revealed via the 6 schools of thought . The 6 referred to here are :
    • śāṁkhya
    • yoga
    • vedānta
    • mīmāṃsā
    • nyāya
    • vaiśeṣika
What do these 6 schools of thought address ? The views of Reality:
Reality = vyāvahātika + pāramārthika ( the manifest or the world of diversity + the transcendent). And what then comes of this thought ?
    How this Reality is perceived:
    • advaita - no separateness or not two - unity
    • dvaita - separateness or 2 - diversity
    • viśiṣṭādvaita - separate yet - unity in diversity
So, one needs to be aware that the 6 schools are a 360º view of reality. To the ignorant they ~seem~ to be competing views; they are not. Together they form a perfect mosaic to help one better comprehend Reality.

Then one comes to worship this reality in the various ways... then we are lead to the various 'denominations' as you have called it.

It is how we get to these branches of worship that is considered the 'study' of sanātana dharma. It is worship with a foundation. Other wise one is like a kite in the wind, blown from here to there.

    यतस्त्वं शिवसमोऽसि
    yatastvaṁ śivasamo'si
because you are identical with śiva
