    Re: Beautiful

    Namaste,

It indeed is sung very well. All the verses of the sikh holy book are set to classical music and sung in the gurudwara. What intrigues me is the picturization of muslims praying in a mosque as the backdrop of the singing of this verse. Highly unusual!

    Re: Beautiful

    Pranams Believer,

I asked my friend for a translation

With every breath and morsel of food, chant the Name of the Cherisher.
He does not forget one upon whom He has bestowed His Grace.
He Himself is the Creator, and He Himself destroys.
He knows everything; He understands and contemplates.
By His creative power, He assumes numerous forms in an instant.
One whom He attaches to the Truth is redeemed.
One who has Him on his side is never conquered.
His Court is eternal and imperishable; I humbly bow to Him.

    - Gurū Arjan Dev, Ādi Granth pp 518-9

I also asked him why there were Islamic s included in the video and his reply was
"It's probably because in the first line, the Gurū uses a Persian (and thus Islamic) appellation for the divine viz. parwar digār, meaning 'cherisher'."

    Namaste M 108 dasa,

Thanks for the research and the translation of the verse.

I listen to them mainly to enjoy the North Indian classical music that accompanies the verse singing. I don't want to take you down the path of negativity associated with the current Sikhism and ruin it for you. But, here is a link for a brief intro, if you need to know more,

    Pranams Believer,

Thank you for the link, I did read it a while ago. I did ask my friend about some details on the tradition he replied as such :

The traditions appear in two broad categories. They're functional eg. Udasis are missionaries and philosophers, Nirmalas are philosophers, Nihangs are warriors, Sevapanthis are philanthropists. The other type is that of revisionist separatist groups such as the Nirankaris, the Singh Sabha. Neo-Sikhism is basically Singh Sabhaism.

It so unfortunate that they have this divide now, it is a very sacred and ancient culture. This same divide and conquer is worldwide, I suppose we can identify the external root cause down to the imperialists.

Just in conversational mode, I only found out recently that the Civil war in Burma that has raged on since 1940's happened just after the imperialists left.

    What a mess....
