chitrAnnam: kalanda sAdam: mixed rice varieties

    namaste everyone.

The idea of this thread is to give random samples from the spiritual, religious and secular Tamizh literature, to the extent I am familiar with it.

When did you last have a course of chitrAnnam--kala~ndasAdam? What is your favourite item: puLiyOdarai (tamarind rice), lemon rice, tomato rice, coconut rice, vegetable briyANi, or another exotic variety? One good thing about such mixed rice varieties is that you have best of all the worlds and excess of none.

This thread is about serving chitrAnnam, as it relates to our body, mind and soul, so we have something of many things. Members might add value to this thread with similar items and varieties. I have added an English paraphrase for each item.

    001. From the booklet

published around the 1940s by the Veda dharmashAstra paripAlana sabhA, KumbakONam

The amount of water one should take for Achamanam is the measure that could sink a grain of the Urad dahl. This is also described as the measure that could sink the mASha-rekhA in the palm. This amount of water is supposed to get to the heart when sipped. During Achamanam, the right hand should be folded in the shape of gokarNa--cow's ear.

    *****

Achamanam should not be done in two yAmas of night (one yAma=3 hours). But then if one needed to go to the toilet, he should do Achamanam thereafter.

    *****

Achamanam should not be done sitting on an Asanam--seat. One should sit in the posture of kukkuTASanam--stance of a hen, keeping his feet on the ground, ensuring that the pruShThabhAgam--buttocks, does not touch the ground and keeping both hands in between the knees.

    *****

Question: Can both hands be kept together when doing the gAyatrI japam?

Answer: No, they should not be. When doing the japam, one should close the hands with a vastram--cloth, and count with both hands. The hands should be stretched out in level with the face in the morning, in level with the chest at noon, and in level with the navel in the evening. The rosary should be kept hanging from the center finger of the right hand and the beads should be pushed with the thumb in counting. The rosary should not be touched with the left hand. The knuckles as well as the rudrAkSha beads are spoken with distinction for counting, in the scriptures.

    asked me to tell you"

In what fell on my back
    as the first blow
    died on the face
    my smile.

    Learned to lie
    on that first day!

    004. 'Easy Stories' from 'A Tamil Prose Reading-=Book'
published in 1859 by the Rev. G.U.Pope

    1. The ascetic and the fisherman

An ascetic, who would not kill any life, walked on the banks of a lake. When he was going, (he saw) a fisherman trying to fish in the lake. Looking at the fisherman, the ascetic said, "Alas! When would you get to the shore?" "Sir, if my load is full, I would get to the shore", said the fisherman.

[The point is the double meaning of கரை ஏறு--kaRai Eru--ascend to the shore.]

    3. The inattentive listener

A guru was teaching jnAnam to his shiShya--student. When he was doing it, the student was keenly watching a rat that was about to enter its burrow. Soon after he finished his teaching, the guru asked, "shiShya, everything entered (your head)?" The shiShya replied, "Everything entered but the tail did not get in." Therefore, any buddhi--teaching wisdom, to the mUDha--stupid, would be in this manner.

    8. The merchant and the blockhead

A blockhead accompanying a CheTTi--merchant, went on a journey. When they were travelling, as it became dark, this man lay down on a ground, while the merchant reclined behind a cluster of plants. When this was so, the blockhead's leg tripped one of the thieves who were going that way. The thief said, "What this this? Looks like a log?" Getting angry, the blockhead said, "Go, go! Would the log in your house be lying down as a frame, tying five coins of money on its hip?" When the thieves caught him, seized the money and started moving away, they discussed among themselves, "Whether this money would be passable or not?" Said the blockhead, "Ah! Is my money such? It's your luck. But then to know if it is passable or not, this CheTTiyAr--merchant, is here, show him", and pointed to the merchant lying nearby. They seized the hundred varAhans of money the CheTTi had and went their way. Thus, with the company of blockheads, ruin is sure to come.

Re: chitrAnnam: kalanda sAdam: mixed rice varieties

    005. From 'AchArakkOvai' by peruvAyin muLLiyAr, a dharma-shAstra book of the Tamizh Sangam times:

The 'AchArakkOvai'--collection of rules of conduct, which is among the shorter eighteen texts of the Tamizh Sangam literature, is a dharma-shAstra based on its Sanskrit originals, such as the shukra-nIti and other dharma, gRuhya sUtras. Here we look at the verses that are relevant to our times.

The eight qualities to acquire for a life of dharma

1: Not forgetting the help done by the others,
    patience (being calm and peaceful),
speaking in words that do not hurt,
    ahiMsA--being harmless towards all beings,
    education,
    being philanthropic in life,
    gaining wisdom in life,
    seeking friendship with the wise,
--these eight are the seeds of life discipline prescribed.

What does one who leads a daily life of dharma gain?

    2. Birth in good lineage, long life, wealth, elegance in appearance,
ownership of land, fame and speech which wins regard, education, and freedom from disease
--these eight benefits will be attained by those who do not swerve from dharma in daily life.

Five great sins that cause the fall and gets life in hell

37: Coveting another man's wife, drinking, thievery, gambling, and murder
--those who know dharma well in life would never think about,
as these sins not only would make one despised but would lead him to hell.

    Five great occasions for charity

48: One's own marriage, pujas related to gods, rituals related to manes, festivities, and yajnas (vedic sacrifices),
on these five days do not fail to donate,
    and feed the guests too.

Four things to be careful about

84: The snake in its burrow, the king (government), fire,
and the lion in its den--these four things,
are young, easy, trained/familiar, thinking thus,
if one is carless, they would cause him trouble.

    No self-promotion

    88: உதவிப் பயனுரையார் உண்டி பழியார்
    அறத்தொடு தான்நோற்ற நோன்பு வியலார்
    திறத்துளி வாழ்துமென் பார்.

    88: Won't speak about help done to others; won't belittle food given by others;
    won't brag about their own deeds of dharma, or observances;
--those who emulate the dharmic life of elders.

Four things to preserve like gold

95: One's own body, wife, wealth pledged for later redemption, for one's one life
    carefully saved wealth--these four things,
should be preserved like gold; otherwise,
it would result in much suffering.

    Nine people who are exempted

100: A foreigner unfamilar with these rules of conduct, a man in poverty, a man of advanced age,
a boy, a dead man, a frightened man, a man who dines,
a man in government service, a newly married man
--these nine people are, so to say, exempted from these rules of conduct.

Re: chitrAnnam: kalanda sAdam: mixed rice varieties

    006. ponniyin selvan--son of the river Ponni (Cauvery), Kalki Krishnamurthy's magnum opus

ponniyin selvan is Tamizh a historical novel in five volumes, narrating the story of the great Chozha King RAjarAja Chozhan and his family. By all standards this is an unputdownable masterpiece, which I would rank among the best in the world. For more details, check this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponniyin_Selvan

The book can be downloaded with a partial English translation here:
    http://www.projectmadurai.org/pmworks.html
(pm0169 series for Tamizh, and pm0278 series and pm0386 for English)

In the second chapter of the book, the author describes an interesting public debate between a devotee of Shiva and a devotee of ViShNu, which was about to turn ugly involving a crowd of supporters for both sides. Vallavaraiyan Vandiya Devan, a leading character of the novel, tries to mediate the sides with a humourously chiding talk.

    Ponniyin Selvan: Chapter 2 -- AzhvAr-aDiyAn Nambi

It surprised him to find only three persons involved in the debate. Even though they were merely three men, the crowd around them periodically cheered their chosen favorites rather loudly. (Vallavaraiyan) Vandiya Devan realized the cause for this commotion and watched to find out the reason for the argument.

Of the three men engaged in the debate, one was a vaiShNava bhakta shikhAmaNi--an exceptional devotee of the VaiShNava faith, who wore the sandal paste as Urdhva-puNDra--vertical (nAmam) marks and sported a topknot on his forehead. He had a short wooden staff in his hand; he seemd quite strong, reinforced with strength (like the log of a tree), in his short, squat frame. The other was a shiva-bhakta--devotee of Shiva, wearing the sacred ash all over his devout body in broad bands. The third man wore saffron robes and had his head completely shaved. It became known that he was neither a VaiShNava nor a Shaiva but an Advaita VedAntin who is past these two sects.

The Shaiva devotee said: "O AzhvAr-aDiyAn Nambi! Give me an answer to this! BrahmA tried to find the head of Shiva, and ViShNu His feet, didn't they? Unable to see the head or the foot, they both did-sharaNAgati--took refuge, in Lord Shiva's feet, didn't they? That being the case, how can be your TirumAL (ViShNu) a greater God than Lord Shiva?"

Hearing this AzhvAr-aDiyAn shook his staff and asked, "Well, look! You vIra-shaiva-pAda-dhULi bhaTTa--learned man and worshipper of foot-dust of the VIra-shaiva sect! Stop your brag! Your Shiva gave boons to the King of LankA, the dasha-kanTha--ten-necked, RAvaNa, didn't he? All those boons, before the kodaNDa--bow of shrI RAma, an incarnation of our TirumAl, turned to husk-dust, didn't they? That being the case, how can be your Shiva a greater God than our TirumAl?"

Re: chitrAnnam: kalanda sAdam: mixed rice varieties

Intervening at this time, this is what the Advaita saMnyAsin--ascetic, who wore kAvi-vastram--saffron clothes, said: "Who do you both argue in vain? However long you argue as to whether Shiva is a greater God, or ViShNu, the vyavAharam--dispute, will not be solved. VedAnta gives an answer to this question. As long as you people are in the lower bhakti-mArgam--path of devotion, you would continue to quarrel about Shiva and ViShNu. There is a jnAna-mArgam--path of knowledge, above bhakti. When you reach that level, there is no Shiva and no ViShNu. sarvam brahma-mayam jagat--all this world is filled with the Supreme Being. What shrI Shankara bhagavad pAdAchArya in his brahmasUtra-bhAShyam--commentary on the BrahmasUtra, has said is..."

Interrupting him at this point, AzhvAr-aDiyAn Nambi said, "Well, look, stop it! Your SankarAchAryAr, after writing his bhAShyam--commentary, to all those upaniShads and bhagavad-gItA and brahuasUtram--know what he said finally?

    'bhaja govindam bhaja govindam
    bhaja govindam mUDhamate
    '

    ['Worship Govinda (ViShNu), worship Govinda,
    Worship Govinda, O fool!']

"He said it three times! Only looking at the mauDIkas--blockheads like you, SankarAchAryar said, 'mUDhamate'. As he said these words, from the crowd arose AhAkAra--'hear, hear!', and mocking laughter, and kara-goShaNam--sound of handclapping.

But then the saMnyAsin--ascetic, did not keep quiet. He said: "Hey, topknot Nambi! Only right that you refer to me as mUdhamati--foolish mind, because, you who are holding a useless staff in your hands, become a useless loafer. To have sought to speak to such a useless loafer as you is due to my mUdhamati, isn't it?"

"Oy SvAmigAL! What I have in hand is not a useless staff. At the required instant it has the power to break your shaven head, look!" Saying thus AzhvAr-aDiyAn raised his staff, and his followers in the crowd cheered him.

To that the Advaida SvAmigaL said: "My dear, hold it back! Let the staff be in your own hand. Even if you hit me with your hand-staff, I shall not be angry. Neither will I seek to fight you. What strikes is Brahman and what is struck is also Brahman! If you hit me you would become hitting yourself!"

AzhvAr-aDiyAn Nambi said, "Now, watch everyone! parabrahman is going to serve a tiruchchAthtu--hallowed-hit on the brahmam. I am going to attack myself with this staff!" and moved towars the ascetic, swirling his staff.

Vallavaraiyan (Vandiya Devan) who was watching all this, wondered if he should confront and grab the hand-staff from the topknot Nambi and serve him a few hallowed-hits with that staff.

But then suddenly the ascetic was not to be found! Mingling into the crowd, he had disappeared. The VaiShNava supporters cheered even louder as they watched (the disappearnace).

Turning towards the VIrashaiva, AzhvAr-aDiyAn said, "Oy pAda-dhULi bhaTTa--learned man and worshipper of foot-dust! What do you say? You wish to argue further, or run away like the SvAmiyAr?"

"Me? Never shall I run away like that mouth-vedAntin. You thought of me too as your KaNNan (KRShNa)? Stealing and eating butter from the GopikAs'--milkmaids' house, and getting beaten by that wooden butter-churn? Before the pAda-dhULi bhaTTa could finish, AzhvAr-aDiyAn interrupted. "Why, look? You have forgotten about your Paramasivan carrying loads of sand for the sake of (an old woman's) dry pudding and getting beaten on the back?" Asking thus, he moved closer to the VIra-shaiva, swirling his hand-staff.

AzhvAr-aDiyAn was a fat, stocky man. pAda-dhULi bhaTTa, the VIrashaiva was a somewhat puny man.

Those in the crowd who encouraged the above two men in the debate were ready themselves to enter the tussle and cheered loudly.

Vallavaraiyan felt that he must stop this absurd rumpus.

Re: chitrAnnam: kalanda sAdam: mixed rice varieties

He came forward from where he stood and said, "What for are you, elders, quarelling? Don't you have anything else to do? If you feel the itch for a fight, why not go to IzhanADu (Srilanka)? A big battle is going on there?"

Nambi quickly turned towards him and said, "Who is this fellow coming up to mediate?"

Some people in the crowd liked Vandiya Devan's valorous appearance and lovely mukha-vilAsam--charismatic face.

"Thambi (O younger brother)!" they said, "You tell them? Tell what is fair to these quarrel-mongers! We will support yuu."

"Let me tell what looks fair to me. It does not seem that Lord Shiva and NArAyaNa-mUrti quarrel among themselves. They stay in-snehitam--friendly, and sumukha--favourable, to each other. When they are so, why should this Nambi and BhaTTar quarrel?" Hearing Vallavaraiyan say this, many people in the crowd snickered.

To that the VIrashaiva BhaTTar said, "This boy seems to be intelligent. But by mere jovial talk, will the vivAdam--dispute be solved? To the question if Lord Shiva is a greater god than TirumAl (ViShNu), let him give the answer."

"Shiva is a great god; and TirumAl (ViShNu) is a great god too. Both the deities are equal. Worship whomever you want, why quarrel?" said Vallavaraiyan.

"How can you say that? To say that Sivan and ViShNu are equal gods, what is the AdhAram--proof?" AzhvAr-aDiyAn demanded, chiding him.

"Proof? Here it is. Last night I had been to VaikuNTham--ViShNu's heaven. Shiva too had come there at that same time. Both were seated in sama-Asanams--equal thrones. They both seemed to be of the same height. Still, to leave nothing to doubt, I measured the heights of them both with my arm..."

"Hey young man! Are you mocking me?" AzhvAr-aDiyAn did-a-garjana--roared

"You tell us, Thambi, come on", shouted the crowd.

"When I measured them, they were of the same height. Not leaving at that, I asked both Shiva and TirumAl directly. You know what they said? 'Hari and Shiva are one and the same. In the mouths of those who do not know it, there is nothing but the dust of shame.' Saying that, they gave this handful of dirt to drop into the mouths of those who quarrel about them!" Vallavaraiyan said and showed them opening his fist. A handful of dust was in his palm. He shaked the dust off his hand and throw it in the crowd.

Getting excited, many men in the crowd picked up a handful of dust from the ground and started throwing it on the heads of AzhvAr-aDiyAn and BhaTTar. Some people tried to stop this durAgraha--obsessive act.

"Hey dhUrtas--cheats and nAstikas--atheists!" Shouting these words, AzhvAr-aDiyAn entered the crowd swirling his hand-staff.

A great disturbance and one-to-one fight was about to erupt there. Luckily, at that time, thwarting all this, a great rustling sound was heard nearby (followed by a stentorian announcement).
