    Diurnal anthropomorphism in Jyotish?

    Namaste and hello HDF reader,

    cit: https://sites.google.com/site/brihat...h7/sayaneffect

While searching for upa wrt: upadesha, upavasa, upapada, upamantri, etc and derivation thereof, I came upon this article that might be of use to some -- :

    quoted verbatim:

    Sayana Avastha

There are 12 Avasthas for each planet in this series. Avastha means the particular state in which the planet is
or the action a planet is supposed to be engaged in at the time of birth of the native.

    These are :-

    1. Sayana, 2. Upavesha, 3. Netrapani, 4. Prakasa, 5. Gamana, 6. Agamana, 7. Sabhagatha, 8. Agama, 9. Bhojana, 10. Nrityalipsa, 11. Kauthuka, 12. Nidra

    Method of finding Sayana Avastha

Find out the number of star on which the desired planet is standing. This is done usually by finding the star on which

the planet is standing and counting from the first star Aswini to the star on which the planet is standing (both inclusive).

Multiply this nunber by the planetary number ( 1- Sun, 2 - Moon 3 - Mars, 4- Mercury, 5 - Jupiter, 6 - Venus,7 - Saturn, 8 - Dragon's head 9 - Dragon's Tail) of the desired planet. The resulting figure is to be multiplied again by the number of navamsa on which the desired planet is standing. Now, add to the resulting figure, the number of star on which Moon is standing in native's horoscope, as also the number of the Asdt (counted from Aries to the sign where Asdt has fallen, both inclusive, and DIVIDE the total by 12; The balance left over indicates the avastha of the desired planet. If the balance after division is zero, 12 is indicated.

Example ; In the Example Horoscope (EH),

Moon is standing on P. Phalguni, 11th star

    Moon's planetary number is 2

Moon is in the 7th navamsa

Asdt is the 12th sign from Aries

    Therefore, 11 x 2 x 7 = 154 plus

11 star on which Moon is standing

12 for Asdt which is 12th from Aries

    ===

Total = 177 divided by 12 gives a remainder/balance of 9 indicating Bhojana Avastha for Moon.

while the post was interesting, I am scratching my head over its title: Diurnal anthropomorphism

    • diurnal - of or during the day; daily, every day
    • anthropomorphism - the attribution of human characteristics or behavior given to a person place or thing.
I can see the connection ( somewhat) of an attribute given to a graha, yet am uncertain why the overall tile was ~tagged~ as such.

    It seems avasthā¹ ( and the 12 deemed in jyotish) is sufficient and some would extend this to wake dream and sleep avasthā-s (yet in kaśmiri śaivism 9 are considered but that is neither here nor there);
    so I remain perplexed.

    iti śivaṁ

    1. avasthā - to abide in a state or condition
    यतस्त्वं शिवसमोऽसि
    yatastvaṁ śivasamo'si
because you are identical with śiva

    Dear Yajvan ji,

I hope you are not pulling my leg! :-)
Isn't it so obvious? The Dina-charya as it is called, daily routine, of human being captured in this unique 12-part system of diurnal states, more or less? Although perhaps not in a simple and obvious linear manner and also the secondary considerations (sub-states) were omitted in the article, perhaps to make it simpler for the average web-reader!

Jyotishis find this classification of states (avasthas) of utility alongwith the 3/5/9 classification, as well although not much gets shared explicitly, but then that is true of much of what we call jyotish!

    Regards,

    Rohiniranjan

(Another similar description is given by Shri JS Sandhu but since that site has a commercial/promotional material in the thread, I am not quoting it since that might be in conflict with forum rules!)

While I see this it seems overkill ( in my opinion only) to offer Diurnal anthropomorphism as its subject matter.
Perhaps I am too traditional and have settled in to the terms offered by the ancients e.g. avasthā.

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler - A.Einsten

The 12 awasthas were named by the ancients too, Yajvan ji! :-)
It is not a matter of being "traditional" or whatever the converse is, but sometimes simply overlooking the obvious which by any standards of *judgment* (-mentality) are neither overkill nor under-cutting! <LOL>

Good to see you becoming active after a hiatus!
