    akṣaya tritīyā - Lasting Achievement

    Namasté

A very favorable day is on its way. The 27th of April, 2009 is akṣaya tritīyā. This occurs 1X per year.
    • akṣaya अक्षय - undecaying
    • tritīyā is the 3rd tithi तिथि i.e. lunar day of 30 that occur each month.
    • akṣaya is related to akṣara अक्षर- imperishable ; made of a अ = 'not' + kṣara क्षर = melting away, perishable ( another name for the body)
It’s the third day of the bright half of the lunar month Vaishākḥ (Vaishakha) April-May. This is the tithi¹ tritīyā occuring in śukla pakṣa¹ or bright half of the month i.e. when the moon , Chandra is on its way to becoming full, pūrnīmā (the full moon) ; this is its 3rd digit, or tithi along the way.

This day is when both sūrya, the sun, and the moon, called chandra, or Gauri ( also called Soma, Durga, Pārvatī, ) are exalted. That is, out of all the places they could be in a 365 day year ( and 360º placement) this is the place they rejoice being in, out of the whole year.

That is, sūrya is exalted in Aries and the moon candra or chandra (some call Gaurī also called Soma, Pārvatī) is exalted in Taurus. This exaltation is called uccā उच्चा - above (in heaven) , from above , upwards , some say ucca is उच्चैस् aloft , high , above , upwards , from above , intense, powerfully.

The Sun + Moon is seen as Śrī Rām + Sītā or Śiva + Pārvatī in exaltation. The Sun is the natural ātmakāraka or the indicator ( called kāraka) of the ātma , the SELF. And Chandra, is that of the mind and of the heart, emotions, fullness of Being all the wholesome things we can think of. The maximum influence of sattva is at this point of goodness, of spiritual influence.
    • It is said that the very first yajña ( some write yajya) the ṛṣi-s (rishi's) performed on this earth took place on this day. They recognized that is was the most auspicious day for maximum benefit and reciprocity between them and the universe ( the devatā).
    • It is also said that akṣaya tritīyā started the first day of sat yuga ( some say tritya yuga also due to the 3rd tithi tritīyā I suspect).
    • There are other stories that Vyāsa-ji¹ began his Mahābhārata on this day; being the son of the great sage and jyotṣa Parāśara this makes perfect sense.
    • A very good day to choose for 'lasting achievements' as the quality of akṣaya (undecaying) will be prevelent all day.

    • Veda Vyāsa वेद व्यास, the one who compiled the veda-s, or Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana ;
      • Kṛṣṇa= dark in complexion and Dvaipāyana suggests where Vyāsa was born:
      • dvi द्वि is 2 ; pāya पाय is water; dvipa द्विप is drinking twice and dvīpa द्वीप an island , peninsula , sandbank.
      • Hence born on an island where two rivers join or meet.
      • FYI - a vyāsa व्यास is an arranger, compiler
    • yajña यज्ञ- act of worship or devotion , offering , oblation , sacrifice
    • śukla शुक्ल- white, bright; the bright half of a lunar month or any day in it
    • pakṣa पक्षthe half of a lunar month ; the first half from new moon to full moon was called pūrva or apūryamāṇa , later śukla or śuddha ; the other half apara or apa-kṣīyamāṇa , later kṛṣṇa or tāmisra ; each fortnight ( or 15 days) consists of 15 tithis or lunar days called prathamā.
    • This pūrnīmā is another name for the full moon…from pūrṇa meaning filled , full , filled with or full.
    • A tithi has certain prada प्रद- the giving , yielding , offering , granting , bestowing , causing , effecting , uttering, influence

Re: akṣaya tritīyā - Lasting Achievement

    Namaskar,

I will also like to add that Akshaya Tritiya falls on eve of the birthday of Bhagwan Parashuram, who is the sixth incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu. I wish everyone an auspicious Akshaya Tritiya.
When the light has risen, there is no day, no night, neither existence nor non-existence; Siva alone is there. That is the eternal, the adorable light of Savitri, - and the ancient wisdom proceeded thence (Svetasvatara Upanishad IV-18). :)
