Jiva Samadhi and the Visitation of a Saint through Murti, Burial, Stone, Lingam, Tree

    Namaste

I want to bring up a what might be a controversial subject, though I am not sure why some consider it so, which I have heard of before but again came up recently.

Jiva Samadhi may mean in general the sleepless sleep of a soul, but in the History of India there is also a specific mystic technique which is referred to using the same term. In this technique, Jiva Samadhi has different connotations between North India and South India, though both regions also share more than they have differences in the result of the method. And in relation to this discussion, both in some cases are used in a discussion regarding a certain mystic endowment of a Murti or Worshipable Form of Devas or Devi, or Lingam or burial place, or even a stone or tree, which in itself has the presence and welcoming of a Saint or empowered being for visitation by and before the worshiper. This is rare, but there may be more examples of such Jiva Samadhi transformation technique in South India than North India but is present in both.

It might even be considered a yoga technique of very advanced nature, where Jiva Samadhi is an “act” or “will power”, or “transformation” consciously performed by a Saint, Sage, Self Realized Savant, a Pure Devotee, a Hindu Mystic, a Muni, a Guru, where the Jiva soul of the Saint consciously steps out from the physical body. The physical body during this time does not enter into the normal decaying state.

This non-decaying physical body is then placed under the Idol or Murti in the inner sanctum of the residence of the Idol where worship or meditation is performed. Why is this done? The body of the Saint receives divine energy from the cosmic planes, which is cosmic energy which is a form of spiritual energy. Also this residence of the Saint or Master’s body might be under a rock, or tree which is considered holy, and not necessarily under a Murti of Devas or Devi. Or in other cases, the actual samadhi burial spot is the endowed place, or under a tree or stone and other examples. The place may be a tirtha.

This energy is then freely distributed as spiritual elevation or evolution to the aspirants, devotees and members who to worship at that site or temple or before the Murti.

It some cases, the Saint may return to the physical body. Remember, this Jiva Samadhi in this case is not a death state. It is a functional state for some purpose. If and when the Saint returns, it may be found that the body is gone. This could be that the Saint has left the world having completed a purpose, or the Saint has physical walked away to join with other wandering monks or yogis. Such a Saint my reappear at a Mela or at a sacred Tirtha, for example may come to Varanasi Kashi or Rameshwaram. Or simply "vanish" (merge into the divine for example).

To add to this further, in some even more rare cases, not only is the Saint in question able to perform this mystic technique, but in some cases is not actually what we think of as human but a “partial incarnation” or manifestation of a former Bhakta or Deity, or even an enemy of God become good, and so on.

Some examples might be Tirumular and Tiruvalluvar.

Would anyone like to comment on experiences related to this, or perhaps know of examples, or if they have this as part of their path and histories within the teachings?

Re: Jiva Samadhi and the Visitation of a Saint through Murti, Burial, Stone, Lingam,

    Namaste ShivaFan,

Imho, you are mixing up samAdhi with parkAyA pravesh and bodiless travel by the Yogis.

SamAdhi : It is a blissful state when a Yogi has attained oneness with God/Brahman. The term Yogi means, "Who joins" ... therefore, only on attaining samAdhi, a person can be called a Yogi.

Bodiless travel by Yogis : This is one of the AnimAs that come to yogis on advancement in yoga-sAdhanA. There are many types of AnimAs mentioned in the Patanjali Yogsutras and Upanishads. The yogi having attained this AnimA can travel leaving his body behind and appear in his subtle form anywhere he likes.

parkAyA pravesh : It is another siddhi of a yogi when he can enter another body (in a dead body) by leaving his own body behind. ShankarachArya had to resort to this to experience knowledge of a householder to defeat BhArati, the wife of Mandana Mishra in ShastrArtha.

Sant Tukaram ji is said to have entered the heaven alive. Just so is Sant MeeraBai and Azhwar Andal. Some names I found under Wiki topic "Entering Heaven Alive" under Hinduism are:

    Sant Tukaram
    Yudhishtira
    Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
    Swami Ramalinga Adigalar
jai hanuman gyan gun sagar jai kapis tihu lok ujagar
