Namaste,
Does anyone know the reason for the moon turning copper red during some of the total lunar eclipses?

Namaste Believer Ji,
Yes, it is to do with the distance between the Earth and the moon and the size of the consequent penumbrae as the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. This causes a sunset colour all around the Earth for those upon the moon, and only red/orange light reflecting back at us from the moon, thus its appearance of being Blood or copper red; This only happens at the center of the eclipse, when the moon is in the umbra of the shadow of the earth.
I believe the colour to be due to the difference in the refractive index of the different colors wavelengths of the light spectrum; the atmosphere slowing the velocity of the light waves bends the light; Red being the longest wavelength is refracted the most and as such is the only light bent around the earth whilst the moon is in the umbra.
Atmospheric refraction.
The phenomenal coincidence or rather the divine correlation, that is the relative distances to size of Moon and Sun to the distance from Earth, being that of 108; is altogether another matter; this is truly the cause and is why the ring sunset occurs for the moon as ketu passes.
Kind regards.

Namaste Believer Ji,
Just double checking my facts; the Red is in fact the least diffracted light, where I have previously stated the opposite, it is the blues at the other end of the spectrum which are removed by scattering, perhaps bouncing of of the earths atmosphere; where as the red end of the spectrum makes it through and around.
Kind regards.
Namaste,
Thanks for the information. From the above posts and the following link,

it appears that the moon assumes that color during every total lunar eclipse - I learn something new every day.

Namaste Believer,
You are most welcome. Jyotish is my favorite subject and this is most certainly that!
The colouring it would seem, depends upon many factors; I had thought the distance, but this is shown it says by the Danjon scale; from the wiki link that you provided.

It would appear that events here on Earth effect the colour ...
As well as the solar cycle; which is related to the Jupitarian year:

Kind regards.
Namaste,
To recap, the color of the moon during a total lunar eclipse depends on a number of factors listed in the links above. The first of the four Blood moons over a period of a year and half occurs tonight over N. America, for those in the area and interested in watching it. Hope it is not overcast in your area.
