How to dispose of damaged murtis or images?

I haven't had it happen, but I'm sure at some point we'll all have a murti or print image or idol that gets damaged or broken. How do you dispose of it? I think simply tossing it in the garbage is the height of disrespect. Burn it, bury it? And if the material will not burn, what to do?

    namaste,
I think the right way to do it is to deposit it in a river but the water has to be flowing i.e. not in a lake or puddle of water but in an actual stream of water.

Vannakkam: This is my understanding as well.

Vannakkam: The couple of times I've seen it done, you wade out into the stream or river and release it, letting it sink to the botton. I've also seen lighter ones (like the clay ones for Ganesh Visarjana) put on small home made rafts, and just let go, to end up wherever. I think this might be as a way to released a picture. Cracked or broken murthis are considered quite inauspicious, and people knowing this won't keep them around. Its always been one of my fears in ordering something on line. .. that it would arrive damaged.

That's even better to know. If it happens now I know to dispose of it quickly and properly. We have several rivers around here. In winter I'd just wear boots. It might be a conversation, uh I mean conversion starter.

I've been lucky ordering most things on-line but I share your concerns about a murti. I've seen some on-line that I thought about, but you really can't be sure.

donate it to a temple nearby (or just keep them under a tree in the temple) if you can not find moving stream of water. that is one way how khandit (broken) murtis are disposed.

    Namast,

EM, Minotaur, agreed that ordering murtis online can be a bit tricky. From experience: brass travels fine, as do plain stone pieces, but with a small bit of carved sunstone, a tiny piece broke off as I opened the packaging.

Throwing it in a river? I can see this coming from tradition and it sure was fine back then.

However rivers today are polluted and throwing a solid object in the river wouldn't be very friendly to it and/or to the system that filters it.

Why not just burn it if it's made of wood or melt it? Or perhaps donate to an artist to make a new murti out of it? It's still perfectly capable raw material.

We're not in the abundance of the old days, we need to worry about resources now!
