    as I view it....

the mind is a bundle of thoughts. The mind and ego (ahaṃkāra¹) are one and the same. The ego and personality are one and the same.
The mind begins with the thought of 'me'... yet the mind goes away every night , it fades away and is no more in deep sleep.

The mind has departments - the intellect (buddhi) , memory or tendencies (citta) or thinking , reflecting , imagining , thought , etc.
All this makes up this individual self-consciousness (ahaṃkāra) .

The question is where does this bubble up from ? It is the 'me' ness of the individual, the 'I' thought that arrives; that 'I' and
an exclusive 'me', as individual begins the grooming of individualality¹ and of duality - 'all is separate from me'. Thus a perfect bed for ignorance to rest in.

So, within the yoga view (of patañjali’s yogadarśana)thoughts are no more then the modificaions of the mind or citta-vṛtti as mentioned in the yoga sūtra-s.

What are those states of mind that may occur ?
    • kṣipta - scattered, distracted or absence of mind ; this word can also mean kṣapā́ or night ( the darkness of mind)
    • mūḍha - stupefied , bewildered , perplexed , or confusion of mind
    • vikṣipta - scattered ; being dispersed in different places
    • ekāgra - one pointed
    • nirodha - arrested; restrained , in check or controlled
For me, my attention is on nirodha.

    iti śivaṁ
    • ahaṃkāra - conception of one's individuality ; literally it is 'I' maker
    • in + divi + duality
      • in is rooted in 'inv' which = to infuse strength , invigorate , gladden
      • divi - look to its 2nd derivation and we have 'div' - this means to play, sport, joke; we also know it means to shine and be bright. most see this in the word deva ( rooted in 'div'). Yet the 1st derivation of 'div' is to cause to lament , to pain.
      • duality - more then 1; and in sanscrit it is dvaita
So, from my point of view in + divi + duality is that strength that infuses more differences and that can bring pleasure (sport) or pain (div).
This is what many wish to avoid on this earth (pain or div) , yet is fueled (strengthened or in) by continuing a high level of 'me' ness, of self-centeredness.
