What did Sage Parashara really mean...?

    Dear friends,

When describing the derivation of upapada in BPHS, the Great Sage utilised the term anuchar, which has many connotations with the keyword being 'follower'.

Some have interpreted as 12th, others 2nd, a few have as 5th!

What has your observations been, about this matter?

    Regards,

    Rohiniranjan

Without repeating someone else's translation, I thought a reasonable view of this can be found here: http://shrifreedom.org/vedic-astrology/upapada-lagna/

If we look to the word anucara ( or anucarā) note how it is used in the śloka.

Thanks Yajvan ji for an auspicious beginning! However, the bhava that follows can have two meanings:

    1. Based on the normal counting of signs in a hs -- tanu-dhan-sahaj-sukh... etc order.

    2. Based on the order of rising in the east -- aries-taurus-- etc

Both would point to the 2nd house!

Why the 12th then...? Unless 'shayan sukha' is what is making many lean towards the 12th which has already risen before lagna rises...?

    Regards,

    Rohiniranjan

For clarity one needs to know how to calculate the ārūḍha lagna. If this is known the upapada lagna based upon jaimini's upadeśa¹ sūtra-s ( first chapter or adhyāya, 4th pāda or quarter) can be known.
Jaimini-ji informs us , the ārūḍha of the 12th house is the upapada.

Now to properly find the ārūḍha we look to the first chapter or adhyāya, 1st pāda and the 30th sūtra; I will leave that to the HDF reader.

For me this ~cracks the code~.

    Dear Yajvan ji,

Mr. Rath in his upadesha sutram presentation in 1.1.30 gives the same method as given by Maharshi Parashara in his BPHS!

If I am understanding you correctly 1.1.30 is the definition for calculating the ārūḍha lagna. So there is no discrepancy as far as I can see. You will agree ( I think) that the upapada is the ārūḍha of some specific house. Based upon jamini it is the ārūḍha of the 12th.

If I am remiss in my comprehension of your post, please advise accordingly.

    Respected Yajvan ji,

No one is remiss etc.! Munde munde mati bhinna has embraced Jyotish in its fold and so whereever we decide to stop seeking and exploring further, we stop?
