    Explain shiva

    Om namah shivay,

How are you guys? Hope you are doing well..

On mahashivaratri , some one asked me explain shiva in smallest sentence possible? I said it is impossible to explain shiva but still he insist to try it....

And at that time only one word com from my mouth....that is "father".
In every moment of life, he is there standing right behind me to teach me, to help me, to show me path.

If someone ask you this question, what you will say?

    Re: Explain shiva

Shivam shantam advaitam chaturtham manyante, sa Atma, sa vigyeyah.

Shiva, which is auspicious, unified and non-dual beyond the three realms is verily the ATMAN, which must be known and experienced in our consciousness.
When the light has risen, there is no day, no night, neither existence nor non-existence; Siva alone is there. That is the eternal, the adorable light of Savitri, - and the ancient wisdom proceeded thence (Svetasvatara Upanishad IV-18). :)

This question is reasonable but is somewhat perplexing....
How so ? uccāra-rahitam vastu - Reality is devoid ( indescribable ) of utterance.

If I say describe water, someone may say 'wet' ; describe sand - 'dry' ; describe a plane - 'fly' . When it comes to śiva where then can there be one word ? If Reality is devoid of utterance, then one is in a pickle to get the right message said that is all encompassing. Yet too the issue of still not being able to express this idea accurately AND with the dignity that is warranted.

Yet, that said, the only word IMHO that resonates with my understanding of śiva is nothing less then perfect consciousness, pure consciousness, and that would be perfect Being (sattā).

    iti śiva
    यतस्त्वं शिवसमोऽसि
    yatastvaṁ śivasamo'si
because you are identical with śiva

Shiva is " Vishnoho Atma ". And I am that Shiva.

The absolute truth lies here. So, Is there any other statement higher than my self is shiva !

Hara Maha deva, Paramatma of all Jivas !

    Re: Explain shiva

You can explain Shiva in one word: sarvam--everything.
    रत्नाकरधौतपदां हिमालयकिरीटिनीम् ।
    ब्रह्मराजर्षिररत्नाढ्यां वन्दे भारतमातरम् ॥

To her whose feet are washed by the ocean, who wears the Himalayas as her crown, and is adorned with the gems of rishis and kings, to Mother India, do I bow down in respect.

    Namaste

When you are with Shiva, that "with-ness" explains itself. A word cannot.

But nothing against words. They can be very helpful. The Name is also a method that points to "with-ness".

    "With-ness" is becoming "Oneness".

    Namaskar Kundanghanekar-ji,

I quite like your description and it would be the smallest sentence I could think of that would be an apt description. I also quite like others' here, as they all describe wonderfully. But all is personal perception, as we all perceive God on our own personal levels.

From my own experience and personal belief, and from a panenthieist perspective, the best description I have ever heard that is the least personal (read: subjective) and least reliant on form - in my opinion only, not necessarily others - is in my sig:

    In Tamil:
    Anbe Sivamayam, Satyame Parasivam

    or Sanskrit:
    Premaiva Sivamaya, Satyam eva Parasiva

    Re: Explain shiva

    Namaste kundanghanekar,

My response would depend entirely upon who I am communicating with; in the predominantly atheist mostly materialist clime in which I live; I would probably say something like:

śiva is the capital U of Universe who consequently also permeates the minuscule u of universe, and in doing so; he is the inevitable but eventual conclusion of life in every body.

    Kind regards.

    Thumbs Up Re: Explain shiva

    Namaste,

It is said that only a devotee of thy father can describe him, so it be to each his own. That bieng said to me the only thing that makes real sense in this world is fostering a relationship with him...
