I Need an Introduction to Adi Shankara

    Namaste HDF,

I've read a little regarding the Hindu guru (I think that's his title, please correct me if I'm wrong) Adi Shankara, and from what little I have read so far, it sounds like his teachings might benefit a soul such as myself. Then again, they may not, but the only way I can find out is if I find out more about Adi Shankara.

So...where do I start? What of his texts should I read, and where might one find them? And how will I be able to tell if his teachings are for me? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Where do I begin?
To tell the story of how great a love can be
The sweet love story that is older than the sea
The simple truth about the love He brings to me
    Where do I start?
So it seems you would like to commence the "divine love story" of getting to know the truth through the works of Adi Shankara.

Well you can click on this link.

Dont worry too much to find out if any knowledge is meant for you or is right for you or not.

Do not put a mental block even before you can commence on a journey for knowledge..keep the mind free and relaxed.

Rig Veda says "Let Noble Thoughts Come From All Directions"

So read anything with an open mind and let the thoughts flow.

The final decision to adhere or not adhere to what you read is in your hands.

    Namaste Ji,

If you would like to know about Sri Adi Shankaracharya's life, you can read his biography Sri Shankara Digvijaya.
He dances in the golden hall of Chidambaram, Let us worship His rosy anklet girt Feet.

    Namaste,

If you are interested in Śrī Ādi Śaṅkarācārya's teachings, I can recommend a book that is concise and affordable. It is the book that made sense of Advaita Vedānta for me: Advaita Vedānta: A Philosophical Reconstruction by Prof. Eliot Deutsch. Prior to reading that book, I had read summaries of his teaching that made it appear incoherent to me. After reading that book, I could see how it all fit together. The key for me was what Prof. Deutsch calls "levels of being."
