Sri Shiva's Third Eye- Vertical or Horizontal?

    Namaste,

There is an ongoing discussion about the famous Vedic Mrityunjaya mantra, wherein Sri Shiva is saluted as the One with three eyes.

Usually, the orientation of the third eye of Sri Shiva is vertical but I have seen in fan art that some people have drawn it as horizontal i.e. parallel to the two eyes.

Do the scriptures tell us anything about the right orientation of the eye?

Some artists have depicted the eye as being partially open, some as closed and the rest as totally open.Which one among these is said to be appropriate?

    From a reply in 2013:

    Namaste

By the way, I was just doing a study of art related to Indra, and this was coming from modern Hindu scholars, not ancient Vedic - modern Hindus who respect Lord Indra.

They were teaching that while Lord Shiva's Third Eye is depicted vertically, e.g. (), that Lord Indra's Third Eye is depicted horizontally, e.g. =

    Lord Indra is Great

    Om Namah Sivaya

    ____

    Other old internet replies:

    Namaste

Sometimes the bindi is seen as a mark of the Third Eye, sometimes some tilak and other markings by a temple priest is also seen as a mark of the Third Eye, often seen as a chakra and also an eye of wisdom. So we may see the Buddha even depicted with a Third Eye.

Interesting note on Indra since He was noted ... He is often also sometimes depicted with a third eye, but the half moons of the upper and lower eye lids are above and below, e,g,:

    =

insteaf of left and right as Shiva

    ( )

    Sort of interesting...

    Om Namah Sivaya
