It is not a well known fact that Ganesha takes avatars too.In fact most of the names commonly associated with Ganesha are in fact names of his avatars. These avatars are detailed in the Ganesha and Mudgala Purana. The 12 avatars of Ganesha are-

    Namaste Omkara,

I'm certainly interested in this thread - this is most certainly news to me! I was aware that Ganesha had 108 names, like many Gods in the Hindu pantheon (I don't know if they are all supposed to, or if it's just the major ones), but I didn't know that some of the names referred to physical incarnations of Lord Ganesha.

So if each incarnation of Lord Ganesha is supposed to slay a specific nemesis, I wonder if each nemesis is supposed to represent a specific form of evil? After all, each name of Lord Ganesha is supposed to refer to one aspect, if I remember correctly.

Also, where can I find good copies of the Ganesha and Mudgala Puranas? I don't think my local library has any Puranas, let alone those two...

Here is something interesting, a murti of Ganesh as one of the Vishnu avatars, in this case Kurma.

Not to get off subject, but I know I have seen such before, such as Ganesh as one of the Vishnu avatars but it is Ganesh! Have you ever seen such, or have any ideas?

Imagine a Ganesh holding a flute to His lips....

We see Ganesha temples or shrines in Kashi so old, the particular Ganapati almost becomes a distinct Deva in Himself, and over time might be considered an avatar - 56 examples in Kashi Khand as seen as distinct.

    Any thoughts?

    Om Namah Sivaya

Since I live in Mubai,I have seen Ganesha represented in all kinds of forms during Ganeah Chaturthi.I have seen him represented as various avatars of Lord Vishnu,aa Lord Shiva, as Murugan and even as Indra.Ganesha is certainly the most versatile Hindu deity.

Namaskara Omkara. Is there an overlap/relationship between the 12 avatars of Ganapati you've mentioned and the 32 roopas of Ganapati as noted here www.shreeganesh.com/32forms.htm
