    starting out in shaivite scripture

    Om namah Shivaya!

I know that Shiva is very popular but I have not read any Shaivite scriptures-- mostly because I have never encountered any.

What scriptures can I find that are translated in to English? I am interested in all facets of scripture: philosophy, mythology, hymns, etc...

    Thank you in advance.

    Namaste

There is much to read. Please consider this post and several posts within the string as various books are mentioned i.e. the āgama-s are a broad set of śāstra-s :

Also the Śiva Purāṇa-s ( Some write Śiva Purāṇam) - here is one ref for the book - I am sure there are many more: http://www.exoticindiaart.com/book/details/IDG617/

    Many thanks!

That last link is great, so many scriptures I have never seen translated in to English-- or have never seen at all!

There are at least 6 classical schools within Saivism. The Tirumantiram, for example is a long Tamil work on the Agamas. There are English translations on line.

Yes. There is nothing that can be seen. At least i cannot see.
That which is without letters (parts) is the Fourth, beyond apprehension through ordinary means, the cessation of the phenomenal world, the auspicious and the non-dual. Thus Om is certainly the Self. He who knows thus enters the Self by the Self.

    Namaste Simex,

    From shiva Mahimna-stotra

O, Giver of Boons, your greatness is the cause of creation, maintenance,
and destruction of the whole universe; this is supported by three Vedas
(ie, Rigveda, Yajurveda, and Saamaveda); it is distributed in the three
qualities (ie, Satva, Rajas and Tamas) and three bodies (of Brahmaa, VishhNu and Mahesha).

The different practices based on the three Vedas, SaMkhya, Yoga,
Pashupata-mata, VaishhNava-mata etc. are but different paths (to
reach to the Greatest Truth) and people on account of their different
aptitude choose from them whatever they think best and deserved to be
accepted. But as the sea is the final resting place for all types of
streams , You are the only reaching place for all people whichever
path, straight or zigzag, they may accept.

    ------------

Even what we think and say arises in Shiva. Vedas are said to be His body.

    Om
