Puranas have examples of both divine (vasuki) and demoniac (kaliya) serpents. But snake in general is auspicious in our culture, unless u sware by the bible.
Yajvan ji quoted a variety of dreams called Rakshasha which are similar to demons. Rahu is the head-end of a demon Swarbhanu and can fit in nicely in that classification. The one about dead ancestors etc before that category would belong to ketu.
For all such recurring dreams and other situations which seem to GRIP one through circumstances and blockages (internal and external), mahamrityunjaya japa(m) is very effective. It should be carried out seriously and sincerely, in as unbroken manner with full focus while not getting by numerical counts and tactile distractions through rolling of beads or other "counters", etc! Both the beeja form and the full form have been very effective.
