    Sankalpa - your experience

    SANKALPA

I would like fellow Hindus to explain Sankalpa.

To me it means to take a resolution, a vow.

    KALPA - vow
SAN - Salute or affirm by a bond or truth which is "broad". Perhaps a better translation can be made.

Examples of when and how a sankalpa is performed and specific vows that could be given - do you have personal examples?

    Dear friend,
Sankalpa is an affirmation of our need to express our faith , our trust , our wish. our plea , our request , our cry for help.

IMHO, Sankalp is a sincere prayer for HIM for bettering our role in the scheme of things. Let me explain - I can "see" that I have some qualities that are undesirable (BG:16.4) and sincerely desire to better myself. However inspite of my best efforts, I don't "see" myself making any progress, then a Sankalp comes to your rescue. IMHO, out here there are two important points - firstly it is your sincere desire for better yourself for a larger good (i.e. bettering yourself so that your family benefits and ultimately society at large is benefitted) and most importantly admitting your "smallness" to make that change through your efforts. IMHO, thus Sankalp also involves "surrender". Sankalp involves deep faith in HIM, that HE alone can get you out of your current position, when all your human efforts have been inadequate.

Just to give an example from material world, I hear that Sankalp has been used to combat vices (alcoholism etc.) to pull a person out of morass

    Namaste ShivaFan ji,

In Tamil, we call this as 'taking Sankalpam', deriving the root word from Sanskrit. To me, it only means taking a vow as in saying, "I will surrender unto god and do this and this activities so many number of times for so many days or until my wish is fulfilled". Yes, I have taken Sankalpa, once to Sri Raghavendra Swami when I was in troubled waters to get out of the trouble. I took Sankalpa that I would stick to/adhere by all rules for following his vrata ("Sankalpa Seva") for 3 days (only), as the vrata is a very hard one.

This link explains in Q&A Sri Raghavendra Swami's Sankalpa Seva procedure: https://meerasubbarao.wordpress.com/...avendra-swamy/

    Regards.
