    Namasthe

I want to have a serious discussion on the hindu marriage...its rules n rituals

According to which puran it says that the bride must be younger than the groom...

As per Ramayan Sita is said to be older than Rama and as per Mahabharat Draupadi must have been elder to atleast one of the pandavas...

Is there any such rule as per the kaliyug dharma....???

    Regards

It is said in the Manu-smriti 9.94 (http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/manu.htm) that a man shall marry a maiden which is much younger than him:

"A man, aged thirty years, shall marry a maiden of twelve who pleases him, or a man of twenty-four a girl eight years of age"

This is also confirmed in the Vishnu Purana: Book III: Chapter X:
    http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/vp/vp084.htm

"If he marry, he must select a maiden who is of a third of his age"

    regards

    Dear friends ,
Any literature reflects the time , place and practices prevalant at that particular set up . Puranas naturaly express the ideas of lore . So we can't go by those ideas . But in general the mental maturity of a girl is different from that of a boy and a girl of 15 years can be compared to a boy of 20 years . But now that also has become a thing of past .The advent of technology , the exposure to the world and experiences have made both equal in all respects .So now the difference in age does not count in deciding the quality or quantityof marital life .

The rules (if any) for Hindu marriage are not so static as to be contained in any book. Different cultures and regions have different priorities and so marriages differ according to culture and region. A Hindu woman can definitely marry a man younger than herself. What is important is commitment, trust and compatibility.

"Virgin girls like cows never milked, who are passed the age of childhood and are ready to leave behind their single lives, who are physically fit to bear the duty of a married life, who are in full bloom of their age, and who have practiced brahmacharya and instruction and have reached the wisdom of those of great learning and virtue, let them marry a man mature to bear children." - Rig Veda 3 55:16

I suppose someone can try and present some fluffy translation full of poetic nuance to confuse the matter, but it is clear to scholars and savants of the Rik, that in Vedic times the preferred marraige was not a child to some old man, but a mature and educated girl to a male also educated likewise and thus equal in the spirit of wisdom, and a male who can actually be fit physically with such a girl who has completed her brahmacharya education so as to bear children and not some feeble old child molester. And an educated girl was considered the best choice of such an equal male.

Yes that is the wisdom that Rg Veda talks about!

If Pakistan attacked and invaded India with legions of tanks and assault helicopters, air coverage by fighter planes and bombers, should India respond in kind defending herself in a cavalry charge on horseback and regiments of chariots?

Krishna and Arjun were in a chariot. So does that argue that we should defend ourself only with chariot?

Of course not. The event in scripture in this case is situational, it is not a scriptural injunction that we can only use chariots but not tanks.

Of course a brahmastra would be nice (smile)! But I am using an extreme example of taking something from scripture and then locking literal events or actions that appear in scripture and translating it into some "timeless" injunction which never existed.

There is an average age range when a girl is mature. But this can vary. This is true for boys, too. And for both, for some, perhaps some should never marry at all, it depends.

And what it depends on can be all over the map.

In some cases, in order to preserve a Royal lineage, a young underage prince may marry a princess of some other realm to form an alliance during a time of high stress and conflict in society and between nations. The female may be underage, or even older than the prince in some cases. Circumstantial things happen in the course of the world.

So sometimes, what we are really talking about is circumstantial examples and general recommendations - the scriptures speak of both. There was an example of royal ladies in South India who had their husbands killed during a conflict against an aggressor, who then burned themselves together (suicide) rather than be taken alive by the enemy to be raped and subjegated by such aggressors while their children are murdered. That is circumstantial, not a justification for sati.

    Garuda eats snakes.

    But I don't.

I am not aware of age differences in case of Rama and Pandavas, but a difference of 10 years in the age of bride and groom was not considered significant. And perhaps that is biologically correct (menopause). And that is perhaps why polygamy was not technically prohibited in Hinduism, though the laws are against it now.
