    Hindu Lunar Calendar

    Namaste,

Does anyone know where to find a non-Gregorian Hindu calendar? I'd prefer to either print something out from online or simply view it and draw my own. It can be in English, Hindi or Sanskrit. It doesn't have to show the ekadashis and festivals since I have those already - just the Hindu lunar months for 2012.

    Thanks!

    Namaste,

The best that google search brings up is....

    http://www.hinduism.co.za/moon4.htm#2012%20January

This requires a copy and paste of the cells into an excel file to create your own calender. Some other site might have a complete one already compiled. Anyone else have any ideas?

Vannakkam Amala: If you search on 'panchang' or 'panchangam' you should have better luck. Himalayan Academy has one in PDF format that is time and latitude/longitude adjusted for most major cities. But there are others around as well.

My temple does one with the major Saiva days, but it starts and ends with Tamil New Year in April.

    Best wishes in the hunt.

    Namaste,

One thing that baffles me is that Jan 1 2012 is shown as a different date of the month on different Indian Lunar calenders. I can understand if the dates were off by 14, signifying the start of the month on Purnima or Amavasya for different calenders for different ethnic groups. But being off by a few days is a mystery to me. I thought the Lunar calenders were tied to Purnima or Amavasya for the start of a month. Evidently not?

    Namaste,

I had a thorough description to offer for each link so that others could pick and choose without going to each address, but was logged off, and lost the message. So, let me simply say thank you. These are very useful. I have several calendars that I will use to create my wall calendar.

    Peace

    Pranam!

Please let me know where do you see different dates? You mean tithis?

    Thanks

    Re: Hindu Lunar Calendar

    Namaste,

Welcome to the forum Shashtriji. And thank you for volunteering to help with my question.

In Saidevo's post above, the 4th link provides Lunar calenders for Indian, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam traditions. Here is what I am having trouble understanding,

    Indian Calender: Jan1 2012 - Pausa tithi 11
    Tamil Calender: Jan 1 2012 - Margazhi tithi 17
    Telugu Calender:Jan 1 2012 - Pushya tithi 11
    Malayali Calender:Jan 1 2012 - Dhanu tithi 16

Unless I am misreading something, the only thing that I can conclude from this data is that the start of the Lunar year (and each month?) for different calenders is not keyed to Purnima or Amavasya. But that is contrary to what I have always believed. Any explanations?

    Pranam.

    Re: Hindu Lunar Calendar

    Pranam

That link has represented things little differently. Actually a tithi is the 12 degree distance between the sun and the moon. 0 degrees == Amavasya, 180 degree purnima....

Now Tamil, and Malayalam calendars don't have a different tithi. Their meaning of tithi is also the same but when they mention in their calendar Tamil or Malaylam tithi (wrongly mentioned) what they mean is total number of days from the Samkranti -- That's their date. Not tithi. Again for shraddha and other purposes they use combination of Samkranti and chandramana Tithi. Certain festivals in tamil calendars are as per tamil date and solar month.

As far as telugu, maharastra, gujarat and maharastra uses amanta system where months end in amavasya. North india uses months end in purnima. Tamil, Malayalam, Oriya, Bengal, Assam and Punjab uses Solar months.

Anyways Indian calendar is very complex. Now Lunar tithis will end and begin at the same instance all over the world and hence tithi will be different on every 'day' due to longitude and latitude differences. This requires to calculate new panchangam for every different city. Please refer to http://www.mypanchang.com/indianpanchang.php and http://www.mypanchang.com/why-there-...nd-america.php.

Now there are various ways to calculate panchangas. Please read http://www.mypanchang.com/vakyam-thiruganita.php.

Now coming back to tithis mentioned in that link. its not ekadasi on 1st January 2012. It should be Asthami in most places in the world as it ends at 19:28:29 GMT. Which means add 5:30 to that time it will end at 24:58:29 on 1st Jan 2012 (past midnight 0:58:29 on Jan 2nd 2012). If you subtract 13:30 minutes for Pacific time zone (California, Seattle) it comes 11:28:29 on 1st Jan 2012 in Pacific time zone (USA).

Now I cannot access that link you mentioned and hence i can't confirm but from what you wrote it says kara 11 (kartika 11 for telugu calendar). Indian calendar says Paush 11 which means the month is correct but tithi is wrong as per that link. Which doesn't mean all sites are wrong.

The difference between Drik Ganitha, Surya Siddhanta and Vakyam could be around 2 to 3 hours. Hence as per any calculation it cannot be asthami (The probharat link you pasted -- which is down at the time of writting). I'm sure that link says wrong tithi details.
