    Interesting Yogas

    Hari Om
    ~~~~~
    Namaste,
    In Jyotish there are various graha yogas, or planetary unions and combinations that are formed. These yogas bring about the promise, potential and/or the possibilities offered to the native for this life span (ayus). I thought I would offer a few for your consideration¹. Perhaps you will find these in your chart.
    What kind of yogas are there?
    Ravi Yogas - involving the sun, Surya
    Chandra Yogas - involving the moon, Chandr, and some write Chandra
    Raja Yoga - or 'kingly' unions giving power, authority, benefit
    Raja sambandha yoga - combinations that show associations with kings, powerful people, or powerful situations
    Dhana yoga - unions giving wealth. Now wealth is not only money , yes?
    Mahapurusha yogas - these produce 5 kinds of great, (Maha) magnanimous persons (purusha).
    Daridra Yogas - unions giving poverty
    Nabhasa Yogas - yogas classified as celestial combinations. There are 4 varieties. Each classification of the 4 varieties, have multiple possibilities to them
    Yogas
    Rajabhrashta yoga
    One yoga that I have not noticed and only recently started check for is the rajabhrashta yoga. The yoga is stated
    like this: The lord of the arudha¹ lagna and arudha of the dwadasamsa ( or 1/12th divisional chart) should be in conjunction.
    What can one expect from this ? The native will fall from a high position. That is, from a career standpoint one may
    expect demotions, or loss of position. Now, if other raja yogas ( see definition above) are stronger a few things can occur:
    1. The fall will not take place at all of there are powerful raja yogas that trump the rajabhrashta yoga, or;
    2. The rajabhrashta yoga takes place, yet the raja yoga is there to support the native and he/she wins back the position or perhaps a new position.
    Pravaraja Yoga
    A union of graha's that allows/compels one to turn (vrt) within or forth (pra)
    This occurs when one has 4 or more grahas in one house - the more benefic the stronger the influence. It's said if this occurs in a Kendra ( 1,4,7 or 10th ) AND one of the graha's owns the 12th house (a moksha house) this yoga occurs. It is important that the 4th house is part of this connection, as it represents home, and in the body; home is the heart-emotion or hrdaya¹. That is this desire for spiritual development.
    Lets say the 4th is not involved - this suggests the person is just getting on this path in this life and the renunciation this person may take will the introductory 'lite' version. Still good, yet is not so energized to seek this with a high degree of alacrity.
    Lets say too that the sun is involved in this yoga , which it usually is, but not always. If there is a combust condition that is, some of the planets are very close to the sun, then this renunciation, if one chooses to do so would not be 'official' or formal.
    In some charts, I see 4 grahas yet one of the nodes ( Rahu or Ketu) are there. The 'rule' says no nodes should be involved. Yet with Ketu as Mokshakaraka, the wise Jyotisha takes a second look. And Kendra houses are recommended, but if Trines are the recipients of the grahas, especially the 9th house, it has dristi (sight) to the 4th house, and stimulates the emotion for spiritual development... Now what if this house has both the 8th, the 12th and the mokshakaraka graha's present? The indication and influence becomes quite strong as all the moksha grahas are in one place, unified in their efforts and influence.
    The stronger the condition, ( exalted, moolatrikona, or owning the sign) the greater the influence of this yoga.
    Tapaswi Yoga
    A union of graha's that bring tapas ( fire or cleansing) to the native this is a yoga with Sani (Saturn) , Sukra (Venus) and Ketu are involved. Sukracharaya is also known as Daitya Guru and is part of Tapaswi Raja Yoga .
    One does not quickly see Venus as a tapas centered graha. He earned this via hanging upside down from a tree for 20 years. This twenty years is the length of Venus' dasa period in the Vimshottari (120 year) dasa system.
    More as time permits.
    Namaste,
    Here is another yoga that is most attractive. Its called Viranchi Yoga, yet my spelling on this is not exact. This yoga forms when:
    • The lord of the 5th + Jupiter + Saturn are in their signs of exaltation or friends signs and;
    • occupy and angle or trine ( a kendra 1,4,7 or 10th house, or trikona , the 1st, 5th or 9th house)
    • A strong Sun ( exalted or well positioned)
    This yoga yields an individual that will have knowledge of the Self i.e. some call this turiyatit caitanya (sustained turiya consciousness). This person will be long lived, highly devoted, learned and much respected.
    The one chart this is reflected in is Śrī Rām. His chart has Jupiter exalted in Cancer His Lagna. Saturn exalted in Libra, a kendra. The 5th house lord of Scorpio, Mars, is exalted in Capricorn kendra. And the Atmakāraka, Sun, is exalted in Aries, the 10th house, another kendra, and considered the strongest bhava¹.
    There are multiple other yoga-s in Śrī Rām-ji's chart, but thought this one was most admirable.
    Namaste,
    A Rāja Yoga consists through the association of kendra lords (1st, 4th,7th or 10th houses) with trikona lords ( the 1st , 5th and 9th houses).
    It's said Śrī Viṣṇu owns the kendra-s and Śrī Lakṣmī owns the trines or trikona-s. When these two associate, you have the combination of Śrī Viṣṇu & Śrī Lakṣmī , hence a rāj (royal or kingly) yoga is formed.
    What does associate mean then? The lords of these houses ( bhava) are:
    • conjoined or in union
    • they aspect or 'see' each other from their existing placement
    • they exchange houses, called parivartana e.g. if the 5th lord resides in the 10th and the 10th lord in the 5th house, they exchanged locations and meets the parivartana definition.
    So, why am i writing about this? As I was looking at Śrī Rām's chart for the last post discussed above, I noticed he has multiple Rāja Yoga-s. Yet when I think Śrī Rām the first thing that comes to mind is dharma¹. And if I look to His chart there is a special Rāja Yoga that is called Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga.
    With Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga the dharma house (9th) associates with the karma house (10th). This meets the Rāja Yoga definition for Śrī Viṣṇu and Śrī Lakṣmī associating. Yet there is these two houses are of great importance in Jyotish. This house of Dharma ( the 9th) and the 10th , a Karma house, of power, position and the highest location of the Sun takes on in the chart and the sky. So when these associate , it’s a special combination as mentioed, Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga. This yoga is excellent as it brings sincerity of the heart, devotion, righteousness ( as dharma matures) or qualities of the 9th house flourish. With the 10th house, that of power & prosperity increases, that of career and how one serves society.
    In Śrī Rām's chart this Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga occurs. The owner of the 9th house is Guru or Jupiter. Jupiter resides in the 1st house and is exalted. In Śrī Rām's chart the 1st house is Cancer. The 10th house is Aries, and its lord, Mars ( Mangal) resides in the 7th house, Capricorn. These two graha's associate because they see each other from each of their locations, and this is graha-dristi and the yoga is formed. Yet due to these graha-s in exaltation more power or should I say the full maturity of the yoga takes place. Yet there is a slight blemish. According to Sanjay Rath¹, when this Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga forms in the 1st and 7th houses then the maturity blossoms later in life after enduring hardships and challenges along the way.
    So now all one needs to do is think about Śrī Rām's story as it is laid out by Valmiki in the Rāmayāna. I am a reader of the Adhyātma Rāmayāna, yet both stories parallel the intrigue of Śrī Rām's life; His exile in the forest, his meeting with muni-s Viśvāmitra and Vaśiṣṭa (Guru or Jupiter's influence) and the help Śrī Rām receives from Hanumanji (this is Mars or Mangal's influence).
    This is just considering this one yoga and does not consider the Sun (Surya) exalted no less in the 10th house. This alone is enough to talk of Royalty and special consideration of Śrī Rām as the Atmakaraka ( Sun) exalted in the 10th house ( the throne of the chart) and indicates a rāja position of Śrī Rām, King of Ayodhya.
    Sīta speaks to Hanumānji - Know Rāma to be the Supreme Brahman - One without a second. I, in the presence of Rāma, His power (or Prakriti) created the Universe unwearied. Adhyātma Rāmayāna, Bala Khana, śloka 32-43
    Re: Interesting Yogas
    namasté
    Here are few simple yoga-s anyone can spot in their own chart without being a jyotisa; the following
    are called lunar yogas:
    • śunapha yoga = śuna + pha : śuna = success , prosperity , welfare + pha = swelling, gain
      • The swelling of welfare and prosperity
    • anapha yoga = ana + pha : ana = away, back ( this suggests the location of the planet , I will explain)
      fearless + pha = swelling, gain
      • The swelling of fearlessness
    • duradhura¹ yoga = dura+dhana : dura = one who opens or unlocks + dhara = a mass of gold or heap
      of valuables and is one of the 8 forms sarasvatī
      • One who unlocks a mass of riches and valuables.
    These yogas are formed by having :
    • a graha 2nd from the moon - śunapha yoga
    • a graha 12th from the moon , or behind it , thus the definition of 'ana' meaning away, back meaning
      behind the moon - anapha yoga
    • a graha both in the 2nd and in the 12th from the moon , where the moon is in the middle - duradhura yoga
    There is a specific rule for these yoga-s : The sun does not count nor do the nodes (rāhu or ketu) count for being
    graha's on either side of the moon. Hence only Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Mercury are part of this yoga configuration.
    Now what yoga is formed when there is no graha on either side of the moon ? Then kemadruma yoga is formed and
    this is considered a blemish ( dru = to injure + ma = to measure out ) . More on the actual requirements for this yoga in the next post.
    Now what yoga is formed when there is no graha on either side of the moon ? Then kemadruma yoga is
    formed and this is considered a blemish.
    For this yoga to form, it simply implies that śunapha yoga , anapha yoga and duradhura yoga does not occur
    ( see the last post for the proper definitions). Yet there is more. For this kemadruma yoga to be of maximum
    effect then there can be no graha-s in kendra-s ( quadrants 1,4,7, and 10th houses) other then the moon from
    the lagna ( ascendent). This is the basic rule.
    Adding to it some jyotisha's also say that there are no planets in the angles ( kendra-s 1,4,7, and 10th) counting
    from the moon -or- if the moon is unaspected by any other planet (graha).
    Results of this yoga
    It is considered inauspicious . Learning & intelligence is affected and some say poverity and troubles comes
    from this yoga.
    Now why does this yoga interest to me? Because mahāṛṣi (mahārishi) parāśar in his brihat-parāśara-horā-śāstra
    (chapter 39) informs us that candra¹ yogas ( lunar yogas) can destroy the effects of other yoga-s.
    This says, if lunar yoga-s are inauspicious , then other yogas outside of the lunar yogas are adversely impacted.
    One must note the possibility of 31 types śunapha yoga-s , 31 types of anapha yoga-s and 180 types of kemadruma
    yoga-s. What does this inform the mindful jyotisha? First look to the lunar yoga-s first before talking of the efficacy of other
    yoga-s.
    candra - the moon; glittering , shining (as gold) , having the brilliancy or hue of light ; camphor ( white); this word
    originated from ścandrá sounding like chee-yandraya, meaning shining , radiant
